THE NEED FOR A

NEW CENTRE

In Bedford alone there are over 2,400 adults (340 between 18 and 25) and 800 children with a learning disability and these numbers are increasing with population growth and are exacerbated by areas with large minority ethnic groups and poverty.

From surveys and consultations we have found a great need for many new services and an increase in current opportunities.  There are minimal opportunities available for people with a learning disability to engage in during the day. The situation is growing worse as the local authority (Bedford Borough Council) cut back on funding and reduce opportunities. Meaningful work placements in the community are very few and far between, along with limited access to work related training.

Opportunities for education and social interaction are also minimal.

EDUCATION, WORK TRAINING &

ENHANCED SERVICES

The new centre will be purpose-built allowing us to provide support for over 300 adults, young people and many more under 18s. There will also be increased respite for parents/carers with a greater number of people being able to access our social activities and the centre’s facilities. The centre will allow a 3 fold increase in person days provided from currently under 10,000 to over 29,000.

Our intention is that the new centre will be much more community inclusive.  It will include a wide range of facilities that will complement our services to people with a learning disability.

The ultimate beneficiaries will be the people with learning disabilities, Autism, challenging behaviour and mental health problems that train, work and socialise both within and outside the centre.  They will have greater employability and volunteering skills, increased independence and an enhanced social life.  All will have a greater quality of life.

THE APPEAL

The appeal will be in three phases and we will need to raise £3.8m to complete.

PHASE ONE - LAND PURCHASE & PLANNING - COMPLETE

Phase One, now completed, concentrated on raising £360,000 to cover the land purchase and associated costs for planning.

PHASE TWO - CENTRE BUILD - IN PROGRESS

Phase Two, currently raising funds for the build of the new centre on our 1 acre site.

PHASE THREE - EQUIPMENT PURCHASE - AFTER PHASE 2

Phase Three, will raise the money to purchase the equipment and fit out the building and refurbish the café and respite flat.

Bedfordshire Opportunities for Learning Disabilities has been a part of the Bedford community for over 20 years

BOLD’s continuing goal is to work strongly with the community as we feel this is important moving forward for the success of our new building and community based facilities in the North of Bedfordshire.

BOLD has established a very successful model which the trustees would like to expand and develop further.  Owing to the size and layout of our present building we are frustrated in the restricted numbers of members we can have at any one time and are limited in the scope of services we can provide.

BOLD’s continuing goal is to work strongly with the community as we feel this is important moving forward for the success of our new building and community based facilities in the North of Bedfordshire.

The new building’s design will enable us to develop further our current programmes and extend into a wide range of inclusive beneficial services and activities that are currently limited in provision or just not available.

In the plans for the new building, we are hoping to include a new training flat which is desperately needed for emergency respite and will help numerous people in times of high stress in their lives.  The café and therapy rooms will support parents, carers and siblings.  The new facilities such as the art, multi-sensory and computer rooms alongside classrooms will enable BOLD to provide better, more sustainable services and be easily able to adapt to future needs.

The community will be able to benefit from the use of many of the new facilities, whether it is as a place to meet or hold a function or by using one of our multi-functional rooms for classes or to receive therapies.  It will bring the community into closer contact with people with a learning disability and provide a more diverse income to support BOLD.

So far the support of the community has been stronger than we ever imagined it to be.

We therefore put great hope in the success of our Bedfordshire Opportunities for Learning Disabilities Appeal in raising the funds to continue and enhance the great work that BOLD do in the community.

This is why the new build is a must.  Thank you for your support so far and we look forward to building our relationship in the future.
